Oops! Humanist poster kids are from a Christian family
As a brilliant P.S. to my last post…
The happy smiley children used by humanists in a don’t-label-me-as-religious billboard campaign actually come from an evangelical Christian family.
The images used by the British Humanist Association (BHA), as part of a nationwide advertising drive, were bought from a stock photo library and the BHA had no way of knowing the children’s background.
The children’s father, Brad Mason, said: “It is quite funny, because obviously they were searching for images of children that looked happy and free.
“They happened to choose children who are Christian. It is ironic. The humanists obviously did not know the background of these children.”
Mr Mason added: “Obviously there is something in their faces which is different. So they judged that they were happy and free without knowing that they are Christians.
“That is quite a compliment. I reckon it shows we have brought up our children in a good way and that they are happy.”

umm. I dont understand the criticism here. The poster says that we should not label a child with a religion they cannot have maturely chosen to follow. To illustrate the idea of a child they found two stock images of children .. I dont see how the religion of those children’s parents has anything to do with it. The posters do not claim that atheists are happy, or that the children are atheists, or even that people should become atheists. This is a poster about strict religious neutrality when it comes to children. Trying to call a child atheist is just as wrong and devicive as calling them a Marxist or a Christian.
Mr Casey,
Thanks for your comment, but the BHA exists to further humanism. They are not neutral. The irony is that they chose children of evangelical Christians because they looked free and unburdened by the sort of dogmatic bilge that the BHA exists to promote.
Good, I’m glad they’ve not had dogma thrust on them. Dogma is always bad, be it humanism or evangelism. I’m glad these children are happy, I’m glad they’re not burdened by hellfire or by … well, I’m not quite sure what humanist dogma would really burden a small child, but whatever.
