We have become so tetchy. So scared of causing offence. Even scared stiff to be associated with somebody who has been accused of causing offence, that when DJ Tom Binns dissed the Queen by stopping short her Christmas message on Birmingham radio station BRMB, he had to pay with his head job.
Apparently, Mr Binns was the only one in the studio, so had to do all the technical side as well. The news was supposed to come on, but the Queen’s Speech was being broadcast instead by mistake.
Not knowing how long it would go on for, he decided to get rid of it, saying, “Two words: bor-ring”.
He then joked about “going from one queen to another” as he played a George Michael song straight after getting rid of Her Maj.
The Orion Media Group programme and marketing director, David Lloyd said they would make contact with listeners who complained to apologise.
“We do not condone what he said in any way, whether said in jest or not,” said Mr Lloyd. “Tom will now not be featuring again on our radio stations.”
More than a tad harsh, but we are mere subjects of Her Majesty and so are required to know our place.
